TIPS ON SAFEGUARDING YOUR PERSONAL
INFORMATION
- Check your credit report on a regular basis.
- Place passwords on your credit card, bank and phone
accounts.
- Secure personal information in your home, especially
if you have roommates.
- Ask about information security at your workplace.
- Don’t give our personal information on the phone,
through the mail or over the Internet unless you initiated the contact, even
then be sure you know whom you are dealing with.
- To reduce the number of
telemarketing calls you receive, the federal government created the National
Do No Call Registry –
www.donotcall.gov or 1-888-382-1222.
- Guard your mail and trash
from theft; shred financial information before throwing it away.
- To opt out of
pre-screened credit card offers call 1-888-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688).
- Before revealing any
personally identifying information, find out how it will be used and
secured.
- Don’t carry your Social
Security card with you; leave it in a secure place.
- Give your Social Security
number only when absolutely necessary.
- Carry only the
identification information and credit cards that you’ll actually need.
- Pay attention to your
billing cycles and follow up with creditors if the bills don’t arrive on
time.
- Be wary of promotional
scams.
- Keep your purse or wallet
in a safe place at work.
